Marshalltown, IA – 50 Miles

July 19, 2010

This morning was the last morning with Lolly. She was supposed to stay and watch us ride out of town, but a lightning storm in the morning pushed our departure back, and she had to head back to camp. Once we said our goodbyes, I headed back up to my hotel room to wait for the go ahead on the ride. It ended up never coming, because the lighting lasted all morning. We finally had to give up, and load up the vans and drive to our next stop, Marshalltown, IA. We had lunch planned with a local day camp for kids with disabilities, and didn’t want to keep them waiting. We had a lot of fun getting to know the kids at lunch, and stuck around to play some classics such as Candy Land, Sorry, Uno, and Skip-Bo. We ended our visit with them with two rounds of musical chairs, and then headed back to lodging for a little down time.

To end the day, we had one last visit with the Arc of Marshalltown, where we had dinner, bowling, and a bit of dancing. I was called over by one of my teammates to meet a woman named Alicia. They had found out that she was a long time client of Camp Sunnyside, and knew I had worked there many moons ago. Alicia swears that she remembered me there, but honestly I can’t recall ever meeting her before. She is however heading back to camp next week, and I told her to say hello to Lolly for me. I just hope she remembers!
